The Festival of Trees is made possible by a dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly to bring the event to life each year. Committed to supporting the Canadian Cancer Society, our team brings together a diverse range of skills and experiences to ensure the festival’s success. From event planning and logistics to fundraising and community outreach, our members share a passion for making a positive impact in the fight against cancer.

Our team’s collective efforts ensure that the Festival of Trees is not only a cherished holiday tradition but also a key fundraiser for cancer research and patient care. By working together and drawing on their extensive backgrounds in various industries, our volunteers continue to inspire hope and bring joy to the community through this annual event.

CO-CHAIRS

The Festival of Trees is organized by a committee of dedicated local leaders and prominent philanthropists led by Sarah Nolan and Nicole George.

Nicole George

Nicole George is a seasoned mortgage broker with over 14 years of industry experience and is the broker-owner of Aplus Mortgage Group. Deeply committed to community service, Nicole has devoted 8 years as a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society and Daffodil Place, where she has been actively involved in initiatives such as Daffodil Days and the One Night Stand campaign. Now in her 5th year on the committee, Nicole is serving her second year as co-chair of the prestigious Festival of Trees.

Sarah Nolan

Sarah Nolan is an Account Manager at TD Commercial Banking, offering strategic financial solutions to a diverse clientele. Passionate about community service, she first volunteered with Daffodil Place in 2009 and rejoined in 2020 to support the Festival of Trees committee. Now in her fourth year, she serves as the Gala Co-Chair, helping raise funds for cancer research. Sarah also serves on the Volunteer Board for the Canadian Cancer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, dedicated to making a positive community impact.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The volunteer committee generously donates their time and energy to help make the Festival of Trees a huge success each year. The committee consists of the following members:

Heather McKinnon

Heather McKinnon joined the Festival of Trees committee in 1999 as the liaison from the Delta Hotel, becoming a full committee member. She served as Co-chair from 2005 to 2022, passing the role to new leaders in 2023. Heather continues as subcommittee co-chair for event prep and serves on the advisory board for the Cancer Society – NL Division. Her awards include the CCS Certificate of Merit, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Senate 150 Service Medal. Heather also manages the Delta St. John’s and Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland.

Margot Reid

Margot Reid, OC, has dedicated her life to community service in St. John’s. As the longest-serving volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, she founded the Festival of Trees in 1997 and remains an active committee member. Margot launched the iconic Daffodil campaign in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1970 and has served on the National Board of Directors and chaired the NL division of CCS. She is also a recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Canada and an Honourary Doctor of Laws from Memorial University.

Anne Puddister

Anne Puddister is currently employed at Puddister Trading Company Ltd. She holds a B.A. Ed. from Memorial University and successfully ran Miss Anne’s pre-school daycare centre for many years. Anne has been involved with the Festival of Trees for over two decades and served as co-chair from 2005 to 2022. Passionate about community, she continues to support the event. She has been happily married for 44 years and is incredibly grateful for her 3 wonderful children and 2 precious grandchildren, who bring endless joy to her life.

Megan Coles

Originally from Corner Brook, Megan Coles is a Senior Manager at Grant Thornton in St. John’s, where she applies her CPA expertise to lead and inspire. Megan actively contributes through volunteer efforts, including her role as co-chair of the Newfoundland & Labrador Committee for the Greater Purpose Program. Her passion for community engagement brought her to the Festival of Trees committee, inspired by the impactful work of Daffodil Place and its positive influence on the community. Megan is dedicated to making a meaningful difference.

Wanda Thompson

Wanda Thompson has volunteered on the Festival of Trees Committee for 15 years and is part of the Tree Decorating sub-committee. A breast cancer survivor, Wanda deeply understands the significance of fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society’s vital projects. She is a Memorial University graduate, a former primary school teacher, and the former owner/operator of a children’s educational toy store in St. John’s. Now retired, Wanda enjoys family life with her husband Robert, and is a proud parent and grandparent.

Katie Hoskins

Katie Hoskins is a Partner in Assurance Services at EY, leading audit engagements for a diverse range of clients. With extensive industry experience, she is dedicated to delivering high-quality assurance services that drive business success. Passionate about community involvement, Katie has served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Cancer Society NL division for over nine years, including four years as Chair. Currently in her fourth year on the Festival of Trees Committee, Katie is committed to giving back and making a positive community impact.

Lorraine Major

Lorraine has volunteered with the CCS Festival of Trees since 2006, initially organizing youth volunteers for the gala. Recently, she joined the decorating team, creating beautiful trees and wreaths for auction. After losing her father to cancer at 12, Lorraine finds meaning in supporting cancer research through this event. Volunteering not only allows her to contribute toward finding cures and better treatments but also provides a rewarding experience working alongside dedicated committee members. It’s a fulfilling journey for Lorraine.

Stephanie Pack

Stephanie has been a volunteer with the festival of trees for 23 years. In the beginning she and Margot Reid collected bottles of wine and decorated the wine tree. In more recent years she has also been a member of the decorating team which includes decorating trees, wreaths and mantle displays for the auction. She is a university graduate. She loves spending time with her children and volunteering.
